Another Celebrity Apology

Although this is a little dated at this point, I can’t resist the discussion of John Mayer’s attempts to understand black consciousness. (Thanks to reader “Presbo” for the discussion and article!)

Here’s an awesome quote.

“What is being black?” he said. “It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.”

In this video, John Mayer apologizes on stage for his racial slurs and overall narcissism in the Playboy article…do we believe him? Will he ever recover from this? How is this similar/different than Tiger?

Not to mention his blatant disregard for women he has dated…Jessica Simpson as “sexual napalm?” Wow. We would not be friends.

My favorite Gatsby quote

I spent the week with high school sophomores, one of whom was reading The Great Gatsby, and I was reminded of my favorite quote from the book. I can’t quite explain why this is so penetrating to me.
