Disclaimer: this post is really boring.
As I visited the House and Senate galleries for the first time on my trip to DC, imagine my surprise when I realized that the person presiding over the Senate was not, in fact, Vice President Joe Biden as laid out by the Constitution.
When we arrived in the House, Nancy Pelosi was present and participating, but not conducting the session.
Hence my Question— Who presides over the House and Senate daily?
And the Answer I found on wikipedia: In practice, freshman senators are traditionally assigned the role of presiding over the Senate in order to learn Senate procedure.
Apparently, the House is similar–they have a rotation.
I’ll be honest, I can’t name many of them by state, much less by sight…I’m still trying to figure out exactly how it works…and who I saw up there on January 21.
History teacher, FAIL.
