My favorite Gatsby quote

I spent the week with high school sophomores, one of whom was reading The Great Gatsby, and I was reminded of my favorite quote from the book. I can’t quite explain why this is so penetrating to me.

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

  1. I think what’s penetrating about this is that the things that keep people together are often their worst characteristics. You would expect and hope otherwise, but the awful truth is that birds of a feather flock together in order to insulate the mass in their common weakness.
