In the Holocaust museum, this poem is posted over a collection of shoes Nazi’s collected from victims. It stood out to me today. I was struck by the calculated killing. Every person was counted, each lock of shaved hair saved. The Holocaust was not rash and thoughtless brutality, it was carefully planned and executed genocide.
We are the shoes, we are the last witnesses.
We are shoes from grandchildren and grandfathers
From Prague, Paris and Amsterdam,
And because we are only made of fabric and leather
And not of blood and flesh,
Each one of us avoided the hellfire
