Question from the master teacher: What can we learn from the Aboriginal people’s situation about our own nation’s condition of ethnic marginalization and poverty?
Response from rich, white kid: “Well, when people are poor it isn’t really our fault because if you give someone money on the street they just turn around and buy drugs or something.”
Out of the mouths of babes…My take is, I’m glad he said it. I mean, once you get socialized into political correctness (around the age of 16) you THINK things like that, but certainly don’t say them. At age 11, you still say stuff people might find atrocious. I think we’ve got our work cut out for us this year.
